Boston is the largest city in Massachusetts. If you fly into their airport, try to get a window seat because the views are incredible!
We took a hop on hop off trolley tour around the city. It was a great way to see all the sights. The tour stopped off at Fenway Park, home to the Boston Red Socks. You can get a tour around the park even if you can’t catch a game. Bleachers Bar is situated under Fenway Park and is the only bar in Boston that offers an on-field view.
On the tour you also pass MIT and the bar featured in Cheers.
Included in your ticket you can go on the Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum. Voted the number 1 museum it is an interactive experience which takes you back in time and explains the history of the American Revolution.
As we walked round Boston there were a number of tours with men and women dressed up as historic characters of Boston. They act out their stories whilst walking the Freedom Trail and explain how they helped the revolt against Britain. We just wish we had enough time to take this tour!
Another place to see in Boston is Harvard University. Located out of the centre it is easily accessible by subway. Famous for educating presidents to IT giants it is also a great place for an afternoon stroll in its yard. You can take a walking tour to learn about the university’s history and see its gorgeous historical buildings.
But really everywhere you go in Boston you won’t be disappointed with the architecture. Beacon Hill is a downtown neighbourhood. It is known for its beautiful doors, decorative ironwork, flowering trees and hidden gardens, all of which you can see as you wander round the streets.
Massachusetts State House is located at the top if the hill overlooking Boston Common.
The number of parks and green space really surprised me in this city. Almost everywhere you looked there were plants, trees and natural beauty.
Boston common is a great place to soak up some sun on a nice day or to explore and uncover the many monuments in the park. There is also a frog pond situated in the centre of the park and if you fancy a game of baseball, there is a ball field too.
In the evenings the city takes on a different vibe. The bars open up and a chilled out fashionable crowd come out to play.
There a numerous bars with diverse offerings from sports bars and restaurant bars, to trendy bars, you’ll be able to find somewhere that’s right for you.
Legal Harbourside is a rooftop bar. Great to see a spectacular sunset. The drinks here are good but don’t come to eat, the menu is limited.
While we were in town we hit up the Cheesecake Factory for lunch, I know these are pretty common in the States but for an English person… all I can say is WOW! You guys are lucky to have these.
We managed to catch a Blue Man Group show too. Such a good show that mixes humour with good beats. The guys up on stage were in perfect character for the whole time. If you get to the theatre early, I’d definitely recommend a few drinks in their bar. The bartender was so accommodating and gave is load of information on how the show is put together.
Boston is a great city to spend a couple of days or a long weekend. The laid back feel just makes you feel instantly at home!
