Labor Day Weekend? YOU MEAN LABOR YAY!

What is labor day exactly?

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. became a federal holiday in 1894.

For most, Labor Day Weekend marks the conclusion of the summer months – a time to sit back, relax and reflect on a season of beaches, barbecues and beer, while diligently reapplying aloe on that blistering sunburn. The weekend may indeed signal the end of one season, but instead of reflection and recuperation, we like to focus on the ushering in of a new season in style. From a thrilling test of endurance along the boardwalk to heart-pounding, fist-pumping music right on the sand, Labor Day Weekend in Virginia Beach is the celebration that such a weekend deserves.

Kicking off the weekend’s festivities with a bang, the American Music Festival will be setting the stage with a stage of their own on the sand in the Oceanfront Resort District. The sounds of rock, jazz, country, R&B, and more will flood the Virginia Beach oceanfront for three sun-filled days at one of the largest outdoor music events on the East Coast. The festival brings together national, regional, and local acts to play on the gigantic stage constructed on the beach at 5th Street, as well as stages in all the parks along the boardwalk. With past acts like 311, Third Eye Blind, Daughtry, Three Dog Night, and Matisyahu, the stages will come alive with music from our past and present.

With the perfect playlist for our Labor Day Weekend, we’ll be putting our rhythm-induced adrenaline to good use as we lace up our shoes and hit the boardwalk for the annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. Being the very first half-marathon-only race, Rock ‘n’Roll has helped to position 13.1 miles as the hugely popular race distance that it is today. Held each year on Labor Day weekend in conjunction with the American Music Festival, half marathon runners are treated to miles of music along the course and a grand finish on the oceanfront Boardwalk, in addition to the 3-day concert series. If 13.1 miles seems like a little too much distance, participants can also opt for the 5K race or Virginia Beach Mile on the Sand and still cross the finish line to party it up with the Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series, featuring a killer headliner.

Why celebrate Labor Day by taking the weekend off? With a slate filled with music and fun, we’ll be turning it up to eleven and running full steam ahead into the fall season. Get out of your beach chairs and make a break for Virginia Beach this year for a rocking good time you won’t soon forget. We’ll see you at the finish line.
