Day two of the Italian Roadtrip and we drove from Lake Como to Sondrio in the foothills of the Italian Alps.
Sondrio is a working town and the locals speak broken English so knowing a bit of Italian would be helpful. There isn’t much to see in the town but we got lunch in one of the local restaurants.
Just outside of the town is the Retici Balzi Hotel, a hotel which is located on a local vineyard.
The hotel is superb. There are absolutely incredible views from the balcony of mountain view rooms. As well a small spa which is available for private hire and wine tasting.
We opted to try the wine tasting. At 6pm we were greeted by Almando, the sommelier and owner. He took us down into the cellar to try 4 beautiful red wines from the region. He paired the wines with cheese and was very informative about how the wine was made and also gave great advice for wines in general. We had a great time trying and tasting the wines. You could even buy a bottle of your favourite.
For dinner we had visited a local supermarket and made a DIY picnic and sat eating on the balcony enjoying the views of the valley at night.
There is a restaurant next door which I’ve read good things about however it is closed on a Monday so we unfortunately couldn’t visit.
In the morning we went down for breakfast which offered a great spread of homemade cakes and tarts. We then set off to head to Bassano del Grappa.
